Council redundancy policy dataset

Do councils pay more than statutory redundancy pay?

Many do. Every English and Welsh council must publish its own discretionary compensation policy, and they genuinely differ: some publish a statutory-only policy, others enhance it up to 104 weeks' pay. We have located and sourced 158 of 339councils' published policies so far.

Coverage, honestly

158 of 339 councils have a policy document we could locate and source (as at 26 August 2026): 127 state an explicit multiplier or confirm statutory-only, and 31 confirm a discretionary scheme exists but defer the actual figure to a document not published online.181 councils' policies were not locatable online at all (often blocked by the council's own website security, not evidence the policy does not exist) and are not listed below rather than guessed at. We add councils monthly; see the dataset's source links for what each row is based on.

A note on the figures below: each council's own policy document is linked (Source column) so you can read the multiplier for yourself. The multiplier and pay-basis columns in the table and CSV are published from those linked source documents and are correct to our knowledge as at 22 August 2026; treat them as indicative and check the linked source for your council. Read how our figures are checked.

Methodology

We searched each council's own published Pay Policy Statement (Localism Act 2011 s.38) and, where separately published, its discretionary compensation policy under regulation 7 of the Local Government (Early Termination of Employment) (Discretionary Compensation) (England and Wales) Regulations 2006, fetching the primary document rather than a secondary summary. Every row carries the source URL and the date we retrieved it; we do not infer or round a figure that is not stated in the document itself. Rows are reviewed periodically; a council whose policy document has since changed should contact us with the correction (see below) and we will re-check and update the row, taking it down first if the current figure cannot be confirmed.

Reporting a correction: if you believe a row is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] This dataset is compiled from councils' own published policy documents and is provided for information only; it is not legal advice, and a council can change its policy at any time. Check your council's current policy document (linked per row) before relying on any entry. with the council name and a link to the current policy. We take the row down while we check it, rather than leave a disputed figure live.

Maintained-school teachers

Teachers and support staff in maintained schools are covered by the same local authority discretionary policy as other council employees, so this table doubles as the enhancement lookup for school staff, not just council staff directly.

Work out your figure

Our redundancy pay calculator offers a local-authority enhancement mode parametrised from this dataset; your statutory redundancy pay remains the reliable legal minimum, calculable there too.

Offered enhanced terms with a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement is only binding once you have had independent legal advice on it. Your employer will usually contribute towards the cost of that advice.
