Last updated: 1 September 2026

The BBC has announced its largest round of job cuts in 15 years as it looks to close a growing gap between costs and income.

What has been publicly announced

The BBC's interim Director-General Rhodri Talfan Davies told staff on 15 April 2026 that between 1,800 and 2,000 roles, around 10% of the BBC's approximately 21,500-strong workforce, would go over two years as the corporation looks for £500m in savings, with the bulk needed in 2027/28 and a voluntary redundancy scheme planned to avoid compulsory cuts.

The BBC was reported to be reviewing back-office functions, including HR, finance, legal and operations, for consolidation or outsourcing to private-sector providers, targeting around £100m of the £500m savings from those functions.

NUJ general secretary Laura Davison said the plans were "wrong, damaging and will cause uncertainty and distress for workers at the BBC". The NUJ and Bectu are the recognised unions for BBC staff.

This page reports only what has been publicly announced, with a source and date against every claim. It does not suggest the BBC has acted unlawfully, and nothing here should be read as a comment on the merits of any individual case.

Who is affected and what this means for you

Roles: As well as content and production roles, the BBC was reported to be reviewing back-office functions, including HR, finance, legal and operations, for consolidation or outsourcing, targeting around £100m of the wider £500m savings from those functions.

Sites and locations: The cuts are reported across the BBC's UK operations rather than one site, with reductions also flagged in local radio, television and online output.

Consultation and union involvement: The NUJ and Bectu, the recognised unions for BBC staff, publicly opposed the scale of the cuts; NUJ general secretary Laura Davison called the plans "wrong, damaging" and said they would cause distress for workers.

If your role sits in one of the back-office functions being reviewed for outsourcing, or in local or regional output, a settlement agreement may be put to you before a full collective consultation process has run its course. Check the 90-day protective-award risk and your redundancy terms rather than assuming the BBC's usual enhanced package applies unchanged.

Your rights in a redundancy at the BBC

the BBC's situation does not change the statutory rules that apply to any UK redundancy: our redundancy consultation guide covers collective consultation and protective awards, and redundancy vs settlement agreement covers how a settlement agreement interacts with a redundancy exit, including the independent legal advice you are entitled to have your employer pay for.

What you are entitled to regardless of what the BBC offers

Whatever the BBC ultimately offers, if you have at least 2 years' continuous service with the BBC you are entitled by law to statutory redundancy pay (a week's pay per full year of service, more for older employees, less for younger ones, capped at £751 a week and 20 years' service for 2026/27, a maximum of £22,530), your notice period or pay in lieu, accrued but untaken holiday pay, and a genuine consultation process, regardless of anything the BBC negotiates on top.

The most recent public reporting on this the BBC programme is dated 16 April 2026; nothing since has changed the statutory floor above, which you can work out for your own age, service and pay with our redundancy pay calculator (see also being made redundant: what happens next).

We have not identified a publicly sourced enhanced redundancy scheme specific to the BBC. If your offer states an enhanced multiple, your adviser checks it as part of the settlement agreement review below.

What to check before signing

Before you sign anything, work out what you are owed regardless of any negotiation, and what is genuinely on the table. These guides cover the detail:
