Current answer, checked 1 September 2026

Is Asda making redundancies in 2026?

Yes, but there is not one single Asda redundancy programme. The 2026 reports cover different groups: store colleagues at selected surplus-staff locations, head-office functions at Asda House, George distribution employees affected by a proposed DHL restructure, and Mitie-employed security officers working at Asda sites.

Your employer, location and letter determine which process and terms apply. Do not assume a package quoted for Asda House applies to a store, depot or Mitie role.

Enter your age, complete years of continuous service and gross pay. The result is the statutory minimum, not an invented Asda package. You can then use the main form to check which other payments and rights may apply.

Complete years only

Before tax. We divide by 52 for the weekly figure.

Enter your age, years of service and pay to see your statutory redundancy pay.

Statutory redundancy pay is 0.5 week's pay for each full year worked while under 22, 1 week for each year aged 22 to 40, and 1.5 weeks for each year aged 41 or older — service capped at 20 years, weekly pay capped at £751. These rates apply in England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland has separate rates. This is an estimate, not legal advice; enhanced schemes and other termination payments can be worth far more.

We have not found a publicly verified Asda-wide enhanced redundancy formula that applies to every store, depot and role. Compare your result with the written calculation supplied for your programme.

Identify the right employer and programme

Which Asda roles, stores and locations are affected?

Public reporting does not name every affected store or employee. It identifies four distinct groups. Find the closest match, then use the employer and programme named in your own communication.

Store colleague

Likely legal employer: Usually Asda

Trade reporting on 17 July 2026 said Asda was changing working patterns across its stores and that stores identified as having surplus staff would offer voluntary redundancy packages. The report said the changes were expected to affect less than 1% of Asda's approximately 90,000 store-based employees and that no compulsory redundancies were planned as part of those store changes.

What to do: Check your store communication, eligibility window, proposed hours and whether an alternative pattern is being offered.

Head-office colleague

Likely legal employer: Asda

Asda was reported on 3 July 2026 to be proposing around 150 job cuts across functions at Asda House in Leeds, including some senior buying manager roles. Usdaw said early consultation had started and reported commitments including enhanced redundancy terms, outplacement support and priority access to internal vacancies for that head-office programme.

What to do: Ask for the head-office scheme rules, your selection pool or volunteer criteria, internal vacancies and the written calculation.

George distribution colleague

Likely legal employer: Check your contract and transfer letter

ITV reported on 3 June 2026 that Asda's proposed George clothing distribution restructure could lead to up to 1,000 job losses. It said around 1,250 employees were expected to transfer to DHL, while about 250 roles were expected at the consolidated Derby operation. The proposal was reported as a separate depot and automation programme, not the same programme as store voluntary redundancy.

What to do: Establish whether your role transfers, is redundant or changes location. Ask who employs you at each stage and whether TUPE applies.

Security officer at an Asda store

Likely legal employer: Reported as Mitie, not Asda

GMB reported that more than 300 Mitie-employed security officers working at Asda stores were at risk under a separate security proposal. Those workers' legal employer was reported as Mitie, not Asda, following an earlier TUPE transfer. That distinction matters when identifying who must consult and which documents govern the process.

What to do: Use the employer named on your contract and letters. That employer is responsible for consultation, pay and any dismissal process.

If the proposed change is a move to DHL or follows an earlier transfer to Mitie, read our TUPE and redundancy guide and ask who is responsible for consultation at each stage.

Package and policy

How much does Asda pay for redundancy?

There is no publicly verified current formula we can safely describe as the Asda package for every employee. Your legal floor is statutory redundancy pay if you qualify. Any enhanced amount depends on the written scheme or offer that applies to your programme.

What is Asda's redundancy policy?

Reporting about enhanced terms for the July head-office proposal is evidence about that programme, not a company-wide formula for stores or depots. Ask HR for the policy or scheme rules, eligibility date, volunteer criteria, calculation method and whether the terms are contractual or discretionary.

For 2026/27, statutory weekly pay is capped at £751, no more than 20 years can count, and the maximum statutory payment is £22,530.

Check the package that applies to me

What do 10, 20 or 30 years at Asda mean for redundancy pay?

Complete years of service matter, but statutory redundancy pay counts no more than the latest 20 years. Thirty years' service does not create 30 years of statutory entitlement. Age bands change the number of weeks awarded, and the weekly cap can reduce the pay figure used.

Service exampleWhat mattersWhat to check
Under 2 yearsUsually no statutory redundancy payNotice, holiday, wages, contract and any discretionary scheme
10 yearsAll 10 complete years can countYour age during each year and the capped weekly-pay figure
20 yearsAll 20 complete years can countAge bands, cap and any written enhancement
30 yearsOnly the latest 20 years count for statutory payWhether the Asda scheme recognises longer service separately

What should an Asda redundancy package include?

Do not compare offers using one headline number. Ask for a line-by-line breakdown so you can see what is a legal entitlement, what is enhanced and what would have been paid even without redundancy.

Part of the offerWhat to check

Your process and rights

What should I expect during an Asda redundancy process?

Consultation should happen while the proposal can still change. Your next action depends on what you have received, not simply on the national announcement.

  1. 1

    Briefing or Workday message

Save the message and ask for the proposal, affected group, eligibility rules, deadline and payment method in writing. A rumour or generic announcement does not tell you your personal position.

  2. 2

At risk or invited to volunteer

Ask whether volunteering is an application, when it becomes binding, how applications are chosen and whether your role could still be selected if you do not volunteer.

  3. 3

    Individual or collective consultation

Ask why your role is affected, how the pool and criteria were chosen, whether proposals can change and which alternatives have been considered. Take notes and correct factual errors.

  4. 4

    Figures or decision issued

Separate statutory redundancy pay, enhancement, notice or PILON, holiday, wages, bonus and pension effects. Ask for the calculation and leaving date, then appeal promptly if something is wrong.

  5. 5

    Settlement agreement received

Do not sign until an independent adviser has explained the payments, tax wording, reference, restrictions, confidentiality and claims you are giving up.

Can Asda reject a voluntary redundancy application?

Yes. Volunteering is normally an application, not an automatic right to leave on redundancy terms. Asda can retain roles or skills it needs, but the decision must not unlawfully discriminate. Ask how applications are assessed, when acceptance becomes binding and whether you can withdraw.

Voluntary redundancy rights and questions

What if Asda offers me another role?

Suitability depends on duties, pay, benefits, status, hours, location and your circumstances. You normally have a four-week statutory trial. An unreasonable refusal of suitable alternative employment can affect statutory redundancy pay, so get the offer and trial dates in writing.

GOV.UK: suitable alternative employment

What redundancy notice should Asda give me?

You should normally receive the longer of contractual notice and the statutory minimum, up to 12 weeks based on service. Check whether you work notice, receive garden leave or get payment in lieu, and what happens to pension, benefits and bonus during that period.

Calculate my notice period

Can I appeal an Asda redundancy decision?

Ask for the appeal process and deadline. Explain errors in the pool, scores, facts, consultation or search for alternatives, attach relevant evidence and state the outcome you want. Keep your letter, meeting notes, vacancy information and calculations.

What fair consultation looks like

Your personal circumstances

What if I am disabled, pregnant, on maternity leave, part-time or off sick?

A genuine redundancy can still be unlawful if the selection or process discriminates. Criteria should be objective, pregnancy or maternity-related absence must not count against you, and reasonable adjustments may be required for disability.

Pregnancy and family leave

Protected employees can have priority rights to suitable alternative vacancies during the statutory protected period.

Maternity redundancy rights

Disability or long-term sickness

Disability-related absence may need adjustment, and consultation methods may also need reasonable adjustments.

Redundancy while off sick

Part-time or other protected status

Part-time status or a protected characteristic must not be used as an unlawful reason for selection or worse treatment.

Discrimination in redundancy

When legal advice becomes necessary

Do I need a solicitor for an Asda redundancy or settlement agreement?

You do not need a solicitor merely to receive statutory redundancy pay. If Asda asks you to sign a settlement agreement that waives employment claims, independent advice is required for that waiver to be valid.

Asda redundancy questions employees are asking

Is Asda making redundancies in 2026?

Yes. Separate 2026 reports concern voluntary redundancy at some stores with surplus staffing, around 150 proposed head-office job cuts, and a George clothing distribution restructure. A separate security programme concerns Mitie employees working at Asda stores, not Asda employees. These programmes have different employers, dates and terms, so your own letter or Workday message is the starting point.

How much redundancy pay will I get from Asda?

There is no publicly verified, company-wide Asda formula that we can safely use for every employee. Your statutory minimum depends on your age, full years of service and gross weekly pay. For redundancies from 6 April 2026, weekly pay is capped at £751, service at 20 years and the statutory maximum is £22,530. Your written Asda offer may include enhanced redundancy, notice pay, holiday pay or other sums on top.

What is Asda's redundancy package or policy?

We have not found a publicly verified current redundancy formula that applies to every Asda employee. Reporting about enhanced terms for a head-office programme does not prove that the same formula applies to stores, depots or every volunteer. Ask for the eligibility rules, statutory calculation, any enhancement, notice pay, holiday pay, tax treatment and the effect on pension and benefits in writing.

What do I get after 10, 20 or 30 years at Asda?

Statutory redundancy pay uses complete years of service, but only the most recent 20 years can count. Thirty years' service does not produce 30 years of statutory entitlement. Age bands also affect the number of weeks awarded, and weekly pay is capped at £751 for 2026/27. Any Asda enhancement must be checked against the written scheme or offer.

Can Asda reject my voluntary redundancy application?

Yes. Voluntary redundancy is normally an invitation to apply, not a right to leave on redundancy terms. Asda can decide which applications fit the needs of the business, provided the decision is not unlawfully discriminatory. Ask for the application criteria, deadline, decision date and whether you can withdraw before acceptance.

What happens if Asda offers me another role?

Whether an alternative job is suitable depends on the role, pay, benefits, status, hours, location and your own circumstances. You normally have a four-week statutory trial period in an alternative role. Unreasonably refusing suitable alternative work can affect statutory redundancy pay, so get the offer and trial dates in writing before deciding.

What redundancy notice should Asda give me?

Your notice is normally the longer of your contractual notice and the statutory minimum. The statutory minimum rises with service, up to 12 weeks. Asda may ask you to work notice, place you on garden leave or make a payment in lieu if the contract or agreement allows. Check whether pension, bonus and other benefits continue or are included in the payment.

Can I appeal an Asda redundancy decision?

Ask for the appeal process and deadline in writing. An appeal can challenge the reason, selection pool, scores, consultation, missing alternatives or factual errors. State what you believe is wrong, provide relevant evidence and explain the outcome you want. Keep copies of letters, scores, vacancy details and meeting notes.

What if I have worked at Asda for under two years?

You will not usually qualify for statutory redundancy pay with less than two years' continuous employment. You may still be owed notice pay, wages and accrued holiday, and you can still challenge discrimination or certain automatically unfair reasons for dismissal. A contractual or discretionary enhanced payment may also use different eligibility rules, so check the written scheme.

What if I am disabled, pregnant, on maternity leave, part-time or off sick?

Redundancy selection and consultation must not unlawfully discriminate. Selection criteria should be objective, pregnancy or maternity-related absence must not be counted against you, and reasonable adjustments may be needed for a disabled employee. Employees on maternity, adoption or shared parental leave can also have priority rights to suitable alternative vacancies in the protected period.

Does voluntary redundancy still count towards collective consultation?

Yes. Acas says voluntary redundancies count when deciding whether the collective consultation rules apply. If an employer is proposing 20 or more redundancies within 90 days at one establishment, consultation must be collective as well as addressing each affected employee's position.

Do I need legal advice before accepting an Asda settlement agreement?

If Asda asks you to sign a settlement agreement, it is not legally valid for waiving the covered employment claims unless you receive advice from a relevant independent adviser. Acas recommends allowing at least 10 calendar days to consider the written terms and get advice, unless the parties agree otherwise. Not every voluntary redundancy uses a settlement agreement, so check exactly what document you have been given.
